…and action!

The first movie project turned up faster than expected.
Actually, I wanted to start the AIM. movie workshop by communicating the most important theoretical projections in a playful and interesting way and afterwards start with the practical part. But with the “Galli Movie Project” the order was quickly turned over. It quickly turned out to be a good entrance task for the students and increased the motivation to learn more about filming and cutting.

The “Galli Movie Project” is a platform, where students can express their wishes, visions and opinions over their social living environment in an artistic project (movie). The project was an international project. Various NGO’s from different parts of the world took part in this project. Afterwards all movies (max. 15 minutes) were collected in the headquarters in Germany.

To find out more about the topics the students were interested in, we all met and discussed possible topics. All of the students wanted to talk about the topic pollution. I was very astonished how many different topics concerning pollution came up. Amina, the youngest member of the Youth Club, suggested to name the movie “Save our children”. Everyone was motivated – a very good start!

Francis, a very engaged member of the Youth Club and me wrote the screenplay for the movie. We divided the movie into two parts. Part 1 was introducing Komenda and the living situation for the inhabitants while part 2 was showing up the problem of pollution and the visions and wishes of the students for a better future. The first part visualised with a tour by the students.
We planned two routes, which were shown by a boy named Francis and a girl named Cathrin. In Francis’ route we showed the whole of Komenda, while Cathrin’s route showed the living conditions in Komenda. We shot the routes separately, but during the cutting mixed the parts, so it seems like Francis and Cathrin would walk at the same time.

Due to a good timetable we were able to shot part 1 on one day and the visions of the student as well as the pollution in Komenda on the next day. I cannot exactly express what the best part was during the shoot. The good working atmosphere, the crew or that everything worked out so well and everyone was happy with what he contributed to the movie. Normally we would have needed more time to do the project a bit more relaxed and work neatly, but the deadline wasn’t determined by us, so we needed to finish everything in only 2 weeks.

In the end we needed only 13 days from the idea until the movie was ready.

Das erste richtige Filmprojekt kam schneller als geplant.
Beginnen wollte ich den AIM. Filmworkshop eigentlich, indem man auf spielerische und interessante Weise die wichtigsten theoretischen Ansätze der Filmproduktion vermittelt und dann mit dem praktischen Teil anfängt. Durch das „Galli Movie Project“ wurde die Reihenfolge kurzerhand umgedreht. Es stellte sich schnell als sehr gute Einstiegsaufgabe für die Jugendlichen heraus und verstärkte die Motivation im Anschluss mehr vom Drehen und Schneiden zu lernen. Manchmal tut es eben gut ins kalte Wasser geworfen zu werden – gerade wenn es hier immer über 25°C warm ist.

Beim Galli-Movie-Project geht es darum, dass man Jugendlichen in Form eines künstlerischen Projekts (Film) eine Plattform gibt, auf der sie ihre Wünsche, Visionen und Meinungen über ihr soziales Lebens- und Wohnumfeld frei äußern können. Das Projekt ist ein internationales Projekt. Verschiedene NGO´s in den unterschiedlichsten Ländern der Welt nehmen an diesem Projekt teil. Anschließend werden in der Zentrale in Deutschland alle Kurzfilme (max. 15 Min) gesammelt.

Um raus zu finden, über was die Jugendlichen gerne sprechen wollen, trafen wir uns alle und kamen schnell auf das Thema des Films. Jeder der Jugendlichen wollte gerne etwas zum Thema Umweltverschmutzung sagen. Ich war wirklich erstaunt, wie schnell beim Brainstorming Umweltthemen zusammen kamen, über die berichtet werden sollte. Durch Amina, das jüngste Mitglied im Youth Clubs, kam der Titel „Save our Children“ zustande. Volle Motivation und alle sind dabei! Eben ein klasse Start!

Francis, ein sehr engagiertes Mitglied des Youth Clubs und ich haben darauf hin das Drehbuch für den Film geschrieben.
Es war am sinnvollsten den Film in zwei Parts zu teilen. In Part 1 geht es darum, Komenda und die Lebenssituation vor Ort erstmal den Zuschauer vorzustellen, bevor man im zweiten Part die Umweltverschmutzung zeigt und die Visionen und Wünsche für eine besser Zukunft anspricht.
Wir haben uns für den ersten Part gedacht, dass dies am besten geht, wenn uns die Jugendlichen selber durch Komenda führen.
Dafür haben wir zwei Routen geplant, die einmal von einem Jungen (Francis) und einmal von einem Mädchen (Cathrin) gezeigt werden. Während Francis Route ganz Komenda zeigt, zeigt Cathrins Route wie man in Komenda lebt und wohnt. Wir haben die Routen unabhängig voneinander gedreht, beim Schneiden wurden sie aber vermischt, so dass es aussieht als ob Francis und Cathrin gleichzeitg laufen.

Durch einen guten Zeitplan konnten wir den gesamten Part 1 an einem Tag drehen und am darauf folgenden Tag angefangen die Wünsche der Jugendlichen und gleichzeitig die Umweltprobleme in Komenda mit 25 Bildern in der Sekunde fest zu halten.
Ich kann nicht genau sagen was bei den Dreharbeiten das Beste war. Die gute Arbeitsatmosphäre, die Crew oder, dass fast alles so geklappt hat wie es im Drehbuch stand und jeder am Ende glücklich war, mit dem, was er zum Film beigetragen hat. Normalerweise hätte man sich noch mehr Zeit nehmen sollen um alles etwas lockerer an zu gehen und noch sauberer zu arbeiten – aber der Abgabetermin für das Projekt war nicht von uns festgelegt und so mussten wir in zwei Wochen alles fertig haben.
Am Ende haben wir es in nur 13 Tagen von der Idee bis zum geschnittenen Endprodukt geschafft.
